WebThis area used to be known as 'Brickfield Hill' which got its name because it was south of Liverpool St where many of the bricks used to build early Sydney were excavated. But by 1899, the brick fields were already a distant memory as site was hindering the expansion of metropolitan Sydney and in 1841 they closed the works. The business was originally established by a free immigrant from England, Anthony Hordern, in 1823, as a drapery shop. He was the founding member of the Hordern family in Australia. A further large menswear store was in upper George Street, and Hordern's also operated one of the largest mail order businesses in Australia. The business remained in family hands for a century, …
